Mari's moving diaper change, or the case of the moveable poo.

Post  dumplingrrl on Mon Aug 04, 2008 10:12 pm

Anyone else's little one trying to escape every diaper change? The normal wet diaper I can manage pretty well now, but the poopy diaper plus a wriggling crawling baby is a recipe for disaster! I usually try to get her to stand up by putting a toy on the sofa, stand her facing it, pull diaper down and off from uder her feet (she's in cloth training pants now) Then wash her real quick before she gets tired of the toy and sits her butt down. I do have to clean up her legs too and I can't get a good look to see it it's all clean in there yet, but this method works better than having her lie on her back because she will then flip over and sit up ensuring a poop smeared surface all around Evil or Very Mad How do you do it? Do you have a tried and true method to share?

I feel you on this one. Ever since J started crawling a few months ago - that was the END of tape disposable diapers. We now have to buy the pant type which I can get on him even when on the move. The downside is that they are more expensive. J poos about once a day or every other day now and it's quite solid so it's pretty easy to clean up. If the situation is um....messy, then it's straight to the shower!!!

BTW, the ONLY time we can do a lying down diaper change anymore is first thing in the morning and even then I have to move quickly. One thing that helps is having a crazy swinging toy hanging from the ceiling in our bedroom and we play with that while I do the change!!

Ugh, I hear you - Ali is just the same, the only time he'll stay on his back is in the middle of the night when he's exhausted. My all time parenting low was trying to change a wriggling & rolling poo-covered baby in his stroller in a cafe toilet.... soooo messy and frustrating.
If we're at home I try to keep him standing up and still by giving him things to look at that he doesn't usually get to play with - my phone, the remote, a toothbrush.

it's a struggle, I pitched the changing table months ago, it's way easier to change her on the ground, more leverage. I place a leakproof cloth beneath her, I have like 20 of them, shaped like squares and easy to clean/wash.

I have lots of her toys on the floor and just keep handing her stuff each time she wiggles too much. She likes books... but her FAVORITE is a wipes, she likes to suck on them. I use the "natural" ones so I don't think she's sucking in anything bad, but I only use that when she's super bad because it always works.

The only way I can keep Sienna still while changing her diaper is also by giving her the wipes packet to hold. Toys work, too, but not as long as the wipes. Funny.

I give her an extra disposable diaper to play with, then work super-fast! It also helps to have a 3-year old to help out by making silly faces or singing funny songs to her Smile

Thanks for all the great replies. Mari also likes the wipes, I have no idea why either, she just likes squishing them with her hands. I'm going to try that next time. Metalmom, I'm jealous of your super cute three year old helper, maybe I can somehow bribe our dog to help make funny faces?

I don't think I knew you had a dog, dumplingrrl. Yes, you should definitely train it to entertain Mari while you change her!
